Having been born [into] an old business establishment in downtown Tokyo, Gosho was familiar with the disappearing lifestyle of these crowded areas and the film shows his understanding and customary attention to small details of everyday life. The story, centered on a law student who makes a young waitress pregnant and then doesn't know what to do with the child, has several calculated plot twists and a splendid central setting--the tea room/restaurant--where Gosho wittily follows his characters.
