The Wind in the Willows: The fight against the railway has been temporarily forgotten, and preparations for the coming winter are underway all through the community. Mole is busy making jam, Rat is bottling damsons and Badger is salting a harvest of runner beans. Toad, however, proposes to avoid all risk of hard work by simply ordering hampers from London. However, after reading an article in Countryman's Weekly, he decides to better himself by ordering an American "Buffalo Patent Canning Machine" from London. Having given away all his fruit and vegetables to his friends, he also has to buy produce to "can" with the machine. However, when Rat and Mole point out his failure to blanch the food beforehand, he laughs it off as an old-fashioned method. When Toad comes to open his tins/cans several weeks later, everything blows up in his face!
