Returning from a Swiss business trip, laser firm executive Mark Bretherick finds his wife Geraldine and their kid daughter in the bathtub, bled to death, possibly suicide but there's note not known motive. Country county police chief Proust gives the lead in this case to recent London transferee, detective sergeant Charlie Zailer. Lacking confidence, she haughtily ignores good advice from competent DC Simon Waterhouse, imagining a boys-conspiracy. Mark gets a strange visit from a woman who had an affair with a man using his name, who now uses a friend's herself. More crime follows.
